University lecturer Frank needs to earn some extra money, so he agrees to tutor an Open University student. His student Rita is a brash, earthy hairdresser with a recently discovered passion for higher education. In her attempts to appreciate literature, Rita challenges the esoteric attitudes of a traditional university, teaching Frank to question his own understanding of his work and himself. The play explores the relationship between student and tutor as Rita changes...

Join Rita at the Wilmslow Guild in her quest to "know everything" as she grapples with a formal education.

Educating Rita was written by Willy Russell and was first performed on 10th June 1980 by the RSC at The Warehouse, London and subsequently at the Piccadilly Theatre, London. The original cast were Julie Walters and Mark Kingston.

Many people will know Educating Rita from the 1983 film adaptation directed by Lewis Gilbert and starring Julie Walters and Michael Caine.

Other plays by Willy Russell include Shirley Valentine, Breezeblock Park and Blood Brothers.
