June sees the return of our annual competitive Festival of One Act Plays, featuring many varied one act plays from dramatics groups throughout the area.

This is a great opportunity to see some really exciting and varied drama from all over the North West. Groups are limited to a maximum of 45 minutes and each evening has several different plays on. Each evening is concluded by a verbal adjudication by our adjudicator.

Plays are entered into three categories: junior (under 14), youth (14-18) and senior. Awards are made on the Saturday night. The awards are:

What the heck is a one act play festival? (in 250 words)

From Facebook during the 2013 festival...

"I was chatting to a lady before the festival started tonight, and she was telling me how much she loves the festival and how this year she was coming to see every night. She wondered why more people don't come and see it all like she does. I think the answer is that a lot of people don't really know what it is all about.

So what can you expect? Well, each night you will see (usually) three different plays from different societies. Each play has been rehearsed and produced by the societies, and they bring them to our festival for the audience's enjoyment and also to compete for awards. So you'll see three short (45 minute) plays, followed by a verbal adjudication by our very knowledgeable (and independent!) adjudicator.

We have three age categories: junior (under 14), youth (14-18) and senior (the oldies). This year we have been careful to mix age ranges each night, so you'll see plays from a number of age categories. On the Saturday night there are three plays, followed by the adjudication, and then followed by the presentation of the awards, which are:

• Best Production (junior, youth and senior)

• Best Individual Performance (junior, youth and senior)

• The Geoffrey Reed Award for Best Director

• The Adjudicator's Award

• The Syd Mence Cup for a Piece of Theatre Magic
