What is a one act play festival?

"I was chatting to a lady before the festival started tonight, and she was telling me how much she loves the festival and how this year she was coming to see every night. She wondered why more people don't come and see it all like she does. I think the answer is that a lot of people don't really know what it is all about.
So what can you expect? Well, each night you will see (usually) three different plays from different societies. Each play has been rehearsed and produced by the societies, and they bring them to our festival for the audience's enjoyment and also to compete for awards. So you'll see three short (45 minute) plays, followed by a verbal adjudication by our very knowledgeable (and independent!) adjudicator.
We have three age categories: junior (under 14), youth (14-18) and senior (the oldies). On the Saturday night there are plays, followed by the adjudication, and then followed by the presentation of the awards, which are:
• Best Production (junior, youth and senior)
• Best Individual Performance (junior, youth and senior)
• The Geoffrey Reed Award for Best Director
• The Adjudicator's Award
• The Syd Mence Cup for a Piece of Theatre Magic
So it's kind of like the Oscars for theatre in Wilmslow. But without the red carpet. Or the big dresses. Or the thank you speeches.
